Brian Knep : Artwork : Prototube Jr

2002, in collaboration with JackBackRack and Jeff Weber

In Prototube Jr, a vertical row of LEDs is spun around a central axis. At high speeds, the LEDs form the illusion of a cylinder of light. The light patterns are organic and inviting, but the spinning hardware is quite scarey.

The artists took on separate tasks in their collaboration. JackBackRack conceived of the project, headed up the design, and built the computer circuitry; Brian Knep created and programmed the organic, ever changing patterns; and Jeff Weber designed and built the physical device.
